A few serious winter bag systems include a synthetic overbag, which absorbs most of this condensation that would otherwise end up in the down. Its 92-inch length and square shape should nicely envelop the mummy bag without unduly compressing the down. Most obviously, it adds warmth, which, as the bag ages and the down flattens slightly, becomes increasingly important.

PRICE – Sleeping bags can get pretty pricey, but we think it’s worth it to invest in a high-quality bag that will keep you warm and provide good rest after a hard day on the trail. Budget options will work well if you don’t backpack much or you’re just getting into it. But for those who go out often, spending more will likely be worth it for higher quality materials, a superior warmth-to-weight ratio, and better packability. The Sierra Designs Cloud 20º is a zipperless sleeping bag that relies on overlapping layers of fabric to trap warmth inside. We liked the sleeve to hold a sleeping pad or pillow (or both) in place sewn into the bag.

 

Synthetic insulation simply can’t match the warmth ratio of down, so synthetic sleeping bags end up weighing 5 lbs or more to reach a 0°F limit rating. This is why 900-fill down sleeping bags tend to be lighter weight than 800-fill sleeping bags with the same temperature rating. So there’s a trade-off to be made between warmth, weight, and cost. Any 0°F sleeping bag that weighs under 3 lbs is doing a decent job of balancing these factors, in my opinion.

 

It’s important to note that while these tests provide a good benchmark, individual comfort can vary based on metabolism, clothing, shelter, and even the sleeping pad used. Because women are usually a little smaller than men, and also sleep colder than men, this winter sleeping bag is a little shorter, narrower, and better insulated than the men’s version of the same model. It’s cut for a women’s body (narrower in the shoulders, wider in the hips) for the absolute best insulation possible. Remember that although this winter sleeping bag works well for casual winter camping, it’s not warm enough for serious winter conditions. The trade-off is that you won’t get sweated out nearly as much if you use this bag in spring or fall.
